sensex of the day: ET Market Watch: Sensex down 434 points, Nifty 22,055 points: Key highlights

hello. Welcome to a new episode of ET MARKET WATCH, your daily podcast for daily market updates. My name is Neha Vashishth Mahajan. Let’s hear today’s main highlights.

After a six-day winning streak, Sensex fell 434 points to close at 72,623.
Nifty closed 142 points lower at 22,055.

Only Metal, PSU Bank and Realty ended in the green, while all other major sector indices ended in the red.

Top decliners in the Sensex were NTPC, PowerGrid and Wipro, each down more than 2 per cent. On the positive side, Tata Steel, SBI, IndusInd Bank and JSW Steel closed on the positive side.

Zee Entertainment fell 15% after reporting $241 million accounting problems uncovered by SEBI.

Tourism Finance Corporation closed at 5% cap after investor Aditya Kumar Halwasiya acquired 13% stake in the company.

Performance by sector:
Nifty Media fell 4.9%, dragged down by Zee Ent, Dish TV, Network18 and others. Other industries, including automobiles, banking, IT, pharmaceuticals, healthcare, consumer durables, and oil and gas, also ended in the red.

Asian markets were mixed, while Chinese markets rose on optimism about confidence-boosting measures by policymakers. The CSI300 index rose 1.8%, and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index surged 3%. Japan’s Tokyo Nikkei index closed down 0.26%.

Oil and Rupees
Oil prices fell due to concerns about production cuts by major producers. Brent crude futures fell 0.57% to $81.87 a barrel, while U.S. WTI fell 0.64% to $76.55. The rupee closed at 82.97 against the US dollar.
