Avalanche failed to produce blocks for nearly two hours, leaving developers rushing to fix the massive outage.
According to its status page, Avalanche stopped adding blocks at 11:13 UTC and said network developers had already begun investigating the issue. At 15:59, the developers released a software upgrade for Avalanche nodes that disables logic that results in an “excessive amount of gossip” between validator nodes. Validators are globally distributed entities that manage blockchain nodes, secure the network, and process transactions. The software patch solved an issue where more information was passed between nodes than needed, straining the network and eventually taking it offline.
