Someone bought CryptoPunk for $16 million.
As Bitcoin approaches all-time highs, sales of eye-catching NFTs appear to be on the rise again. CryptoPunk was sold for 4,500 ether, worth more than $16 million at current prices.
This is the second-largest sale of a blue-chip NFT collection ever, following the $23.7 million CryptoPunk purchase made in February 2022.
The CryptoPunk 3100 sold on Monday morning was sold for $2,127 in 2017 and changed hands again in 2021 for $7.58 million.

There are 10,000 unique CryptoPunks. Each punk has randomly generated attributes such as different glasses or hairstyles. Punk 3100 is one of the nine so-called alien punks with blue skin. The rarity of this attribute makes Alien Punk the most popular CryptoPunk.
The other two Alien Punks are currently selling for $17.8 million and $19.6 million.
CryptoPunks was published by Larva Labs in 2017, which later sold its intellectual property to Yuga Labs, the developer of the Bored Apes NFT collection, in 2022.

At the time of writing, the NFT collection is currently the most popular NFT collection today, with a 24-hour trading volume of $17.16 million and a market capitalization of 570,000 ETH (~$2.03 billion).
Other popular NFT collections, such as Bored Ape Yacht Club and Pudgy Penguins, have market caps of 192,500 ETH ($683 million) and 143,097 ETH ($507 million), respectively.
CryptoPunk 3100 is not the most expensive NFT sold to date. During the 2021-2022 NFT craze, Pak’s NFT artwork titled “the Merge” sold for $91.8 million, making it one of the most expensive pieces sold to date.
