Today, the social simulation raised $5 million for AI-based ‘realistic NPCs’.
TODAY, an AI-based social simulation game, has raised $5 million in a seed funding round. This notable investment round was co-led by Sfermion and Big Brain, with a roster of investors including GSR, Collab+Currency, Lingfeng Innovation Fund, Compute Ventures, and Builder Capital, with significant contributions from individual and institutional backers including: Tommy Tran, Metavest Capital, 32 Bit Ventures, Dingaling, Grail, and Spirit DAO.
‘Realistic NPCs’ are today’s USP
TODAY sets itself apart in the gaming industry by delivering a next-generation social simulation experience where players foster vibrant communities on virtual islands.
A standout feature of the game is its AI-based villagers, NPCs with complex needs and personalities that players must engage with. This advanced AI technology ensures that each interaction within the game reflects the unpredictability and depth of a real-life conversation, making each game unique and enriching the player’s experience.
According to TODAY co-founder Michael O’Connor, the game aims to redefine player expectations through realistic NPC interactions.
O’Connor highlights the game’s ambition to create a social simulation game of unparalleled depth and immersion, mirroring real-world dynamics through sophisticated AI.
TODAY prioritizes storytelling
TODAY’s commitment to narrative depth and character development is further emphasized by the impressive credentials of its development team.
The team includes Oscar-winning Creative Director Benjamin Cleary and industry veterans from notable companies such as Nintendo, SEGA, Epic Games, and Unity. Cleary emphasizes the game’s story-first approach, which aims to foster true emotional connections and provide a personalized narrative experience for each player.
TODAY leverages advanced AI, user-generated content, and cryptocurrency.
The capital injection was earmarked to develop TODAY’s proprietary character engine, which leverages cutting-edge AI technology to create intelligent non-playable characters (NPCs).
A portion of the funds will also be allocated to improving no-code creation tools, making it easier for players to design and build in today’s immersive worlds. Powered by generative AI, these tools give players unparalleled creative freedom to build and customize their virtual islands.
Industry experts are optimistic about its potential to redefine gaming today. Sam Kim, General Partner at Big Brain, praised the game’s innovative use of AI and Large Language Models (LLMs), which are expected to provide a new level of dynamic responsiveness and realism in virtual worlds.
Likewise, Dan Patterson, General Partner at Sfermion, highlights the unique integration of AI, user-generated content (UGC), and cryptocurrency in creating immersive, community-driven virtual experiences.
As the gaming landscape continues to evolve, TODAY’s innovative use of technology and storytelling is poised to make a significant impact.
TODAY plans to release regular playtests via Discord and release an alpha version in early 2025.
