Research shows that mobile devices are the catalyst for efficient decentralized infrastructure networks (DePIN).

Chainwire, Zug, Switzerland, April 24, 2024

Researchers from the Communication Systems Group at the University of Zurich, in collaboration with the Acurast Association, which powers Polkadot and other ecosystems, have revealed groundbreaking results in their latest study, “Performance Analysis of Distributed Physical Infrastructure Networks and Centralized Clouds.” This work demonstrates the viability of Decentralized Physical Infrastructure Network (DePIN) as a powerful alternative to existing centralized cloud computing platforms.

Leveraging blockchain technology and the Internet of Things (IoT), DePIN aims to strengthen data sovereignty, reduce reliance on centralized models, and improve system resilience to potential failures. This study specifically highlights and evaluates Acurast, a novel distributed serverless cloud network that leverages the underutilized resources of smartphones to perform complex computing tasks with enhanced security and efficiency.

Important discoveries:

  • Improved efficiency: Acurast has demonstrated the potential to perform computationally intensive tasks more efficiently than traditional cloud services such as Google Cloud Platform and Amazon AWS.
  • Power Efficiency: Acurast significantly reduces power consumption compared to traditional centralized server infrastructure, making it an environmentally friendly alternative to existing solutions.
  • Empirical evidence: This study provides empirical evidence supporting the theoretical benefits of DePIN and demonstrates Acurast’s ability to handle computationally intensive applications with reliability and cost-effectiveness.

“The emergence of decentralized technologies offers a unique opportunity to rethink how we manage and operate digital infrastructure,” says Jan von der Assen, PhD student and junior researcher in the Communication Systems Group (CSG) at the University of Zurich (UZH). .” project. “Acurast can not only challenge the status quo, but also present a scalable, secure and sustainable model for future computing needs.”

This research is an important step toward understanding and leveraging the power of DePIN for computing. It opens up a real alternative to traditional cloud providers, especially for applications in all industries where confidentiality is of utmost importance.

The full research paper is publicly available and has been accepted for the DePIN workshop at the upcoming International Conference on Blockchain Technology (ICBC) 2024.
