Apple powers Siri and iOS with ‘Apple Intelligence’ and OpenAI.

Apple is set to unveil Apple Intelligence, its answer to the artificial intelligence (AI) wildfire sweeping the tech world.

The Cupertino company will take the stage at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) on June 10-14 to announce its new “Apple Intelligence” lineup of AI-based products and services, Bloomberg reports.

According to the report, Apple’s plan is to roll out a hybrid onboard/cloud approach to integrating AI services across its product line. Where possible, iPhone and iPad use separate hardware (onboard chips) to run AI services, and when more powerful models are needed, the devices rely on cloud services.

This allows Apple to maintain consumer privacy for applications such as predictive text, input suggestions, and simple queries. However, when it comes to more powerful creation capabilities, it looks like the company will be working with OpenAI on ChatGPT. This is an exciting prospect considering that OpenAI is partnering with Microsoft for cloud services.

Additionally, Apple is said to be beefing up Siri with new features. Siri was once synonymous with virtual assistants, but it is now starting to show signs of age, falling behind competitors like Samsung that have already adopted modern generative technologies.

The new version of Siri is expected to be able to follow detailed instructions to perform personalized tasks, such as deleting specific emails or performing photo editing.

It’s not yet clear how Apple’s late entry into the AI field will be received by consumers, but one thing is certain. So far, the general reaction to the term “Apple Intelligence” has been largely negative.

Experts, consumers, and analysts have long been waiting for Apple’s first foray into the world of generative AI following the launch of OpenAI’s groundbreaking ChatGPT. As rivals Microsoft and Google struggle to secure leadership positions in AI, numerous articles have been written speculating that Apple has fallen behind in the so-called AI race.

By comparison, the Cupertino company has been relatively quiet on the AI front so far. AI-generated Apple Emojis, the launch of the powerful Siri, and the introduction of “Apple Intelligence” into the company’s products will likely be enough to keep Apple atop the market value leaderboard for the remainder of 2024.
