Musk warned that Apple devices would be banned if OpenAI is integrated at the operating system level.

(Reuters) – Billionaire Elon Musk said on Monday he would ban Apple (NASDAQ:) devices from the company if the iPhone maker integrates OpenAI at the operating system level.

“This is an unacceptable security breach,” Musk, who is CEO of electric car maker Tesla (NASDAQ:) and rocket maker SpaceX and owner of social media company X, said in a post on X.

“And visitors will have to check at the door for their Apple devices, which will be kept in Faraday cages,” he said.

Apple and OpenAI did not immediately respond to Reuters’ request for comment.

This morning, Apple announced a partnership with OpenAI to bring ChatGPT technology to devices, as well as numerous AI capabilities across apps and operating platforms.

Apple says it has built AI with privacy “at its core” and will use a combination of on-device processing and cloud computing to power these capabilities.

“It is patently absurd that Apple is not smart enough to create its own AI, but can ensure that OpenAI protects users’ security and privacy!” Musk said about

Ben Bajarin, CEO of consulting firm Creative Strategies, says no one will follow Musk’s lead and Apple wants people to know that its private cloud is as secure as keeping their data on their devices. He added that he is trying to educate people.

“What (Apple) is now trying to add to the story is to bring about the same anonymization of user data and firewalling of that information, just as (the data) is moved to a secure private cloud. Apple doesn’t really see that.” he said

Musk sued OpenAI, which he co-founded in 2015, and CEO Sam Altman in early March, claiming they had abandoned the startup’s original mission to develop AI for the benefit of humanity rather than profit. .

He also founded his own startup, xAI, to challenge OpenAI and build an alternative to the viral chatbot ChatGPT.

xAI was valued at $24 billion in its last funding round and raised $6 billion in Series B funding.
