Unstoppable Domains and Kintsugi Global, a renowned Japanese Web3 service provider, have submitted an application to the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) to register the first DNS-enabled Web3 domain specifically for anime and manga enthusiasts. The proposed domains “.anime” and “.manga” aim to create a unique digital environment that respects and enhances these vibrant cultural exports.

The collaboration between San Francisco-based Unstoppable Domains and Tokyo-based Kintsugi Global reflects significant progress in integrating Web3 domains into existing Domain Name Systems (DNS).

By targeting legacy generic top-level domains (gTLDs) and placing these new domains alongside well-established domains such as .com and .net, we seek to make significant advancements in our digital branding strategies.

The two companies last year animedomains.com has been released. It is a digital marketplace focused on these specialized Web3 domains. The timing of the ICANN submission coincides with ICANN’s next six-year registration period, which is expected to begin next year.

Kintsugi Global has announced plans to launch a new platform for animation and manga creators, along with support for Japan’s National Vision of Digital Garden Cities (DigiDen). The platform is designed to leverage blockchain technology for content distribution, ensuring creators retain control over their intellectual property. This initiative will also strengthen fan engagement through Web3 communities and digital collectibles, in line with the broader goals of the .anime and .manga domains.

“Pursuing .anime and .manga Web3 domains through this ICANN application seeks to empower creators, foster a global fan community, and unify anime and manga cultures from around the world into a unique digital identity they can proudly claim. It represents Kintsugi’s commitment,” said Ron Scovil, CEO of Kintsugi. , said in a statement.

If ICANN approves the application, these domains will not only join the ranks of established top-level domains, but will also pioneer a new model for community-driven digital identities.

Sandy Carter, COO of Unstoppable Domains, highlighted the potential impact, saying, “These domains will provide valuable digital space, enhancing the branding potential of creator and fan engagement.”

This application is part of Unstoppable Domains’ broader strategy to bridge the gap between Web3 domains and their Web2 counterparts, or “twins.” Unstoppable aims to broaden the appeal and accessibility of Web3 technologies by providing a seamless transition for businesses and individuals wishing to participate in the decentralized web by integrating into established DNS.
