Anthropic launches Claude 3.5 Sonnet to compete with OpenAI’s GPT-4o

Anthropic on Thursday announced the launch of Claude 3.5 Sonnet, which will compete with OpenAI’s GPT-4o and Google’s Gemini 1.5 Pro. The San Francisco-based company said the Sonnet is its most “intelligent” model and the first release in its upcoming Claude 3.5 family.

Claude is a generative AI chatbot similar to ChatGPT or Gemini. Bots have gained enormous popularity thanks to their incredible ability to mimic human conversation and perform tasks such as writing poetry or code.

Anthropic says the Sonnet is faster and more humorous.

In a blog post, Anthropic claimed that the Claude 3.5 Sonnet outperforms its closest competitors in key benchmarks such as coding, math, and reasoning. The company said that Sonnet, which allows writing and editing, is twice as fast as the existing flagship model, Claude 3 Opus, and is 80% cheaper.

The company said, “It (Sonnet) has noticeably improved nuance, humor, and ability to understand complex instructions, and shows an outstanding ability to write high-quality content in a natural and relatable tone.” “It makes code translation easy, making it especially effective for updating legacy applications and migrating code bases.”

Anthropic added that the Claude 3.5 Sonnet performed well in tasks that require visual reasoning, such as interpreting charts, graphs, or copying text from “incomplete images.” The new model comes after rival OpenAI introduced its GPT-4o model in May. Anthropic says it will release more advanced models, the Claude 3.5 Haiku and Claude 3.5 Opus, later this year.

Users can try Sonnet for free on the company’s website, Claude.ai, and on the Claude iOS app. Claude said Pro and Team subscribers will have access at higher speed limits. Chatbots are also available through Anthropic API, Amazon Bedrock, and Vertex AI on Google Cloud.

Meanwhile, Anthropic has also launched ‘Artifacts’, a feature that allows users to ask the Claude artificial intelligence chatbot to create text documents, code, mermaid diagrams, vector graphics or games. The artifact appears next to the chat conversation window.

“This creates a dynamic workspace where you can view, edit, and build on Claude’s creations in real time, seamlessly integrating AI-generated content into your projects and workflows,” the company wrote.

Anthropic is backed by Google and Amazon and has raised $7.3 billion in funding over the past year. Amazon alone has invested $4 billion in the company.
