Lupine Launches Generic Edarbi in the US with Exclusive 180 Days

Lupine Limited announced that it has received Abbreviated New Drug Application (ANDA) approval from the US FDA and launched Azilsartan Medoxomil Tablets (40mg, 80mg) in the US.

The released product is a generic version of the branded drug Edarbi®, indicated for the treatment of high blood pressure in adults. According to IQVIA data, the reference drug recorded estimated annual sales of $53.5 million (approximately Rs. 445 million) in the US market in the 12 months to April 2026.

These products are manufactured through Lupin’s global manufacturing network, which includes 15 manufacturing facilities supporting production scale and supply continuity. The company said it is an exclusive “first to register” applicant for this product in the U.S., so it is eligible for a 180-day generic drug exclusivity period.

Under this framework, other generic manufacturers are not permitted to sell competing versions of the same drug in the United States for 180 days from the date of launch. During this period of exclusivity, the market is limited to the original brand product and the first registered generic version, subject to regulatory provisions on the approval of generic drugs.

In the absence of competing generic entrants, the exclusivity window generally limits the price pressure that a multiplayer generic market can experience. This allows the first-list manufacturer to operate without immediate price competition from other generic players during the initial launch phase.
