AGI is still a distant dream, says Baidu’s Robin Li.

Robin Li, co-founder and CEO of artificial intelligence (AI) company Baidu, said that although many people are concerned about the rapid development of AI, The era of artificial general intelligence (AGI) is still more than 10 years away.

AGI refers to: A theoretical artificial intelligence system that surpasses human cognitive ability, Concerns continue to arise about potential risks to humanity.

Robin Li addressed these concerns during a panel discussion at VivaTech Paris 2024, emphasizing: AI technology still has a long way to go to achieve AGI.

At the panel, Li said:

I think there are more than 10 years left.<…>. Today’s most powerful models are far from that. We don’t yet know how to achieve that level of intelligence.

Li emphasizes that developers must: Prioritize the use of AI technology to solve social problems. He believes that addressing these concerns will advance fundamental AI models. Brings us closer to AGI.

Despite the fears surrounding AGI, Li believes the development of this technology is Address concerns about population decline. When AI reaches human-level intelligence, it could potentially solve human problems by providing the equivalent productivity of billions of people.

Overall, the journey toward AGI is seen as a path to solving important societal problems and improving human productivity.
