Amazon’s robotaxi unit Zoox begins testing in Austin, Miami By Reuters
(Reuters) – Zoox, the self-driving car division of Amazon.com (NASDAQ:), said on Wednesday it plans to begin testing robotaxi in Austin and Miami. This will be the first testing site outside the Western United States.
Zoox will be distributing the modified product. toyota (NYSE:) said in a statement that it has Highlander test vehicles in small areas near business and entertainment districts in both cities.
The announcement comes as the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is investigating 500 Zoox vehicles equipped with self-driving systems after two crashes.
Austin and Miami will be the fourth and fifth public testing locations for Zoox, which already has operations in San Francisco, Las Vegas and Seattle.
Zoox will not yet offer transit in Austin and Miami, but said it is exploring several cities for commercial service after an initial launch in target markets Las Vegas and San Francisco.
Along with Zoox, self-driving robotaxi companies such as General Motors (NYSE:)’ Cruise and Alphabet (NASDAQ:)’s Waymo have also been embroiled in NHTSA scrutiny related to the performance of their self-driving vehicles.
Cruise said it had resumed operations in Dallas, Texas, with a small number of human drivers, after suspending operations in San Francisco last October due to an accident involving one of its robotaxis.
