The worst participants in this session were: Appen Co., Ltd. (ASX:), which was down 10.19% or 0.11 points to trade at 0.97 at the close. Omni Bridgeway Ltd (ASX:) was down 5.23% or 0.08 points to close at 1.45 and Resolute Mining Ltd (ASX:) was down 3.95% or 0.02 points to close at 0.37.

On the Sydney Stock Exchange, advancers outnumbered decliners by 569 to 547, with 346 closing unchanged.

The index measuring the implied volatility of S&P/ASX 200 options fell 7.47% to 11.60.

Gold futures for April delivery fell 0.07%, or $1.55, to $2,164.55 per troy ounce. In other commodity trading, crude oil for April delivery rose 0.68%, or 0.53, to $78.09 per barrel, while the May Brent crude oil contract rose 0.65%, or 0.53, to $82.45 per barrel.

AUD/USD rose 0.11% to 0.66, while AUD/JPY rose 0.05% to 97.59.

U.S. dollar index futures fell 0.02% to 102.53.
