bitcoin core – Why are the current network fees so high?

I bought some BTC on Coinbase, as I’ve done quite often in the past, but when I tried to transfer it to my personal wallet, there was a network fee of £16. I’ve never seen fees this high before, so I’m a little perplexed. Is this something that is likely to go down over time, or will I have to pay £16 to transfer it to my personal wallet?

Normally I don’t store my BTC on exchanges as I prefer to keep it in my wallet.
