It’s not a new program
Boulder’s food tax rebate program was first approved in 1967 through a voter initiative to ease the financial burden on low-income residents.
“This program aims to expand financial support to strengthen the economic stability of our communities,” a press release from the program said.
In 2023, the city distributed about 1,100 food rebates totaling about $162,000, including about 679 to seniors, 267 to families with children and the rest to people with disabilities.
Since 2014, Boulder has distributed 8,000 food tax rebates worth more than $900,000, with 53% going to seniors, 38% to family members and 9% to people with disabilities. The average rebate amount for seniors and people with disabilities in 2015 was $77, while for families with one or more children under 18 it was $236.
Additionally, in 2015, 827 people applied for rebates and all applications were approved, and in 2023, 1,093 people were approved and 148 were rejected.
Separately, Boulder is also looking for volunteers to help with its food tax rebate program. Volunteers work five hours a week to help authorities process applications and provide administrative support.
