Antler Interactive’s latest release, Cloudborn, was successfully demonstrated at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco last week. The first Web3, RPG, MMO, AI and PC-based games showcased at both the Inworld and BGA booths proved to be more than just a long string of acronyms.
Constantin Berthelier, narrative designer at Antler Interactive, led demos and game tests for attendees at this year’s show. “We had all kinds of testers, including big names from big studios and publishers. Others were developers who were most curious about our titles,” he explained.
Attendees appeared to be most curious about Cloudborn’s use of AI-enabled non-playable characters (NPCs). This is something competing titles are competing to implement. By taking advantage of First Mover, the Antler Interactive team was able to significantly increase interest in their AI-NPC character, Zero.
Konstantin said: “We expected most of the GDC attendees to be aware of the latest updates on the AI scene and to be a bit sassy when interacting with characters. But no, it really gave an amazing effect! “Most users are overwhelmed by the fact that they have the freedom to say whatever they want to Zero,” he said. He then added, “No matter what testers told him, Zero stayed relevant and personable.”
Cloudborn is a Web3 game title. This means that various game elements leverage blockchain technology to give gamers more control and self-ownership. This is assumed to open the door to many opportunities in the fast-evolving and highly competitive technology space. “Executives from large publishers like NetEase, Square, Enix and Amazon all thought this (the web3 aspect) would be interesting, even more so when we explained what this could allow,” said Constantin.
Cloudborn aims to enhance gaming experiences through a unique combination of AI and web3 technologies. Using advanced, partner-developed, gameplay-driven AI, Inworld – Cloudborn introduces a world that evolves as players move, changing environments and characters in real time, leading to more immersive and personal games. Oliwer Svensson from Antler Interactive says: “This is more than just data. It’s about the unpredictable ways AI shapes characters.” Using blockchain means players truly own their characters, items, and achievements.
Those who tested the new game at the Game Developers Conference commented that it was “beautiful,” “unique,” and “fresh,” and also praised the “well-made UI.” One attendee said Cloudborn designed “the best UI to include AI prompts and feedback.”
Antler Interactive is committed to establishing Cloudborn as a market leader, and attendance at the conference has proven to be a catalyst for Antler Interactive’s development commitments. During the event, they began initial partnership discussions with several game creators, developers, artists, narrative designers, technology experts, Web3 experts, etc., making significant connections to support their growth.
What was most interesting for the Cloudborn team was that while there was a noticeably large web3 presence at GDC, there was no direct competitor for their title at the event. “There were other Web3 games, but they offered very different concepts. There were AI companies out there, but they didn’t explore narrative in the same way we did when it came to creating dynamic NPC personalities. “For one game project, we were considering narrative development and AI, but not a live model.” Cloudborn left the event satisfied with the feedback and knowledge that they have a unique proposition in Web3 games that drives ownership, experience, AI NPCs, and advanced transactions.
