Core Developer Apprenticeship Program: Second Cohort

Does the development of the core protocol that powers the Ethereum blockchain excite you? Are you interested in participating at the most basic, technical level of the Ethereum protocol?

I’m happy to announce it. We are now accepting applications for the second cohort of our Core Developer Apprenticeship Program (CDAP).!

What is CDAP?

My name is Piper Merriam and I am a core developer. This means that development and maintenance of the Ethereum protocol is part of my job. Protocol development has been accelerating recently. The “merge” is getting closer every day, the path to achieving a “stateless Ethereum” continues to evolve, and we have plans to clean out the long-standing “evil” in EVM. There is no shortage of work to be done, but unfortunately there is a lack of people with the knowledge and expertise to get it done. That’s where you come in.

This EF Protocol Support Initiative is my way of helping people get involved in core protocol development. Here are some details:

  • Submit your application via: September 13th
  • The program will run from late September 2021 to February 2022.
  • Participants will have direct access to the core developer community.
  • Participants will have the opportunity to work on real-world projects that have a real impact on the Ethereum protocol.

The goal of the program is to provide first-hand experience of how core protocol development works and provide support as you learn about the protocols on which Ethereum is built.

first cohort

we have started The first cohort, “Cohort 0” Two months ago we launched our Core Developer Apprenticeship Program (CDAP). Since then, about 15 developers have been exploring, learning, researching, and contributing. Many of these developers came in with little to no prior knowledge of the inner workings of Ethereum. Two months later, the same developers are working on:

  • We are researching alternative ways to document and specify the Ethereum protocol.
  • Research how you can modify or remove the SELFDESTRUCT opcode
  • ZKSync deployment support
  • Building a new P2P network for portal networks.
  • Write your own EVM implementation

Now that we’ve proven the concept, we’re launching our second cohort.

doing something worthwhile

Developing core protocols is the most impactful thing I’ve done in my professional life. I can leverage my expertise and knowledge to manage and improve multi-billion dollar protocols. A protocol that I believe will play a key role in creating a more just and equitable future for humanity. I can’t say the same for the various “competitive” jobs I’ve had before. Do you want to join us in building a future that excites you?
