Cristiano Ronaldo unveils 4th NFT collection with Binance despite $1 billion lawsuit

Portuguese soccer superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has announced the launch of his fourth collection of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) in collaboration with Binance.

The new collection, scheduled to launch on the Binance NFT Marketplace on May 29, will celebrate the footballer’s history and feature highlights from across his career.

According to Binance’s blog post, Cristiano Ronaldo said:

“My football journey has seen me travel all over the world and I am honored to play for some of the most prestigious clubs there. Now it’s your turn to join me on the journey.”

The number of NFTs included in the new collection won’t be announced until the series launches, and there’s no word on pricing so far. However, the post states that while the price will be the same for all “regular NFTs”, the price for the “ultimate super rare NFT” in the collection will be different.

Previous NFT events featuring Cristiano Ronaldo have featured benefits outside the digital realm, including a premium experience where owners are invited to play soccer with the legend as part of a Binance promotion.

As Cointelegraph reported in November 2023, the football superstar was previously sued in a class-action lawsuit in a U.S. District Court in Florida for his participation in selling an NFT collection with Binance.

The plaintiffs in the suit claimed that Ronaldo “coordinated with Binance to promote, support and/or actively engage in the offering and sale of unregistered securities” and that Binance should have known that he was engaging in such activity.

The lawsuit against Cristiano Renaldo comes as Binance’s previous legal troubles resulted in founder Changpeng “CZ” Zhao being convicted in the United States of facilitating fraud. He was sentenced to four months in custody in April 2024 for his involvement in a money laundering scheme.
