El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele has been granted special permission to temporarily step down from office to seek a second term in El Salvador’s upcoming elections on February 4, 2024. The move is in line with the 2021 Supreme Court ruling and the Constitution. The interpretation states that Bukele can only seek a second term if he leaves office six months before the start of the next presidential term, which begins on June 1, 2024.

A notable concern for many Salvadorans was the security of Bukele. Especially given his unwavering approach to fighting criminal organizations, making him a potential target for these illegal groups. To address these concerns, the legislature approved his presidential security detail.

Meanwhile, Claudia Juana Rodríguez de Guevara was appointed presidential nominee. She will serve as Custodian of the Presidency until June 1, 2024. Rodríguez de Guevara has had a long-standing professional relationship with Bukele and has worked with him in various roles throughout his career. Her most recent positions include serving as Personal Assistant to the President and Chair of the Board of Directors. local public works bureau.

Despite his extensive background working with Bukele, Rodríguez de Guevara maintains a subtle public profile with a minimal presence on social media platforms. She is unlikely to see any major policy changes during her term as trustee. Her positions on important issues, such as national policy on Bitcoin, remain undisclosed due to the temporary nature of her role. However, given that she is sympathetic to Bukele’s past approaches, it is expected that she will continue to follow the direction of her current administration.
