Devcon: What are your future plans | Ethereum Foundation Blog

Everything about Devcon

Now that we’re well into the new year, the Devcon team wanted to share our thoughts on what’s coming at Devcon this year. With new goals driving this year’s efforts, we’ve learned from the successes and challenges of recent years and will provide some initial details about what’s to come.

For those new to the Ethereum family, Devcon is the only annual gathering held by the Ethereum Foundation, dating back to a small gathering held in Berlin (ÐΞVcon-0) about a year before the network’s launch. For some members of the Ethereum ecosystem, Devcon is a family gathering of sorts, while for others it’s a big stage where they can talk about the latest innovations with content ranging from technical research to application launches and more.

Over the years, it has become clear that Devcon serves the community in other ways as well. As we plan Devcon 6, we are defining these goals and working to ensure that Devcon achieves each goal.

1. Collaboration and knowledge sharing

Devcon is where a lot of the work happens. It’s an opportunity to be in the same room as everyone else in the community to solve a specific problem. It’s important that attendees can find a meeting space, a space to talk, pick up a whiteboard and start working.

2. Teach, communicate and create new ideas.

Devcon is an opportunity to learn and teach! People come to Devcon to understand the cutting edge of the Ethereum space and share what they have learned over the past year with a wide audience both at the event and online.

3. Use our biggest stage to send your message

DevCon is an important opportunity to communicate with the world about Ethereum. As the industry’s largest conference, Devcon is gaining attention from the wider technology space and mainstream organizations. Let’s show them what we have achieved.

4. Use Ethereum-based technology through “dog food”

Devcon is a conference built by and for our community, and we should use tools built by our community when possible and beneficial to attendees. In the spirit of educating the community and supporting Ethereum-based projects, Devcon should allow attendees to experiment first-hand with products built on Ethereum.

5. Ethereum ecosystem growth

Devcon is an opportunity for each of us to connect with people from other teams and communities, including those related to Ethereum and blockchain, and newcomers from other industries. Over the past few years, we’ve collaborated with UNICEF and the Internet Archive on stage to engage the zero-knowledge community. Many people who are unfamiliar with the Ethereum ecosystem are attending Devcon. developerelopers criminalFYI, by the end of this week they will be welcomed and inspired by our amazing community.

listening and learning

Our ecosystem is maturing and constantly improving, and we know Devcon needs to keep pace. In response to this, the entire team first wanted to convey the following: thank you For your constructive feedback that we are confident will help us lead the way to the best event we have ever held.

Specifically, the Devcon plan (dc⟠vi) has made improvements in six key areas to deliver a better attendee experience:

Specifically, we aimed to find places that:

  • State-of-the-art WiFi infrastructure and connectivity
  • Improved crowd flow, meeting space and stage
  • In-house and convenient catering options for attendees of all needs and diets.

We’ve also taken a closer look at our internal processes and are excited to talk about the following topics soon:

  • Improved programming and stage selection process
  • A fairer and more diverse ticketing system
  • More ecosystem integration (dog food)

By simply resolving some of these, a high-speed, modern WiFi infrastructure will facilitate streaming capabilities for the workshop experience for the global Ethereum user base and attendees who are entitled to watch each stage live. No matter how many friends you have in the field, there are ways to connect with each other.

Over the past two years, the Devcon speaker application process has been decentralized, with a multi-track process and more than 50 reviewers. This year, we’re aiming to improve the experience for all applicants, measure attendees’ preferences for help with stage selection, and more.

Our goal is to provide the best experience possible for all attendees while staying true to Ethereum’s roots. I think we are well on our way to making this a reality this year and we hope you all will join us.

what future plans

We are planning our first Devcon where eth2’s beacon chain will be activated and Ether will be staked! In addition to the improvements listed above, we are planning events with ongoing dogfooding, a more seamless ticketing process, and more. I will explain all of this briefly in the next post.

For this year’s regions, the Devcon 6 search began before Devcon 5, with the understanding that the further ahead we were in terms of planning, the smoother the process would be for all attendees. After listening to the community and conducting a thorough site search in more than 10 cities, we have found a region and location that truly deserves the event and are confident we can host it by achieving all of the goals outlined above. Best devcon ever.

We will be announcing the location of Devcon 6 soon. — Stay tuned. EF Blog Learn more about site selection, early application information, and more.

Update (March 27, 2020): Out of respect for our community and those around us facing the ongoing global health crisis, our team has decided to temporarily hold the scheduled Devcon presentation first mentioned above. As other news continues and our plans continue, we appreciate your continued patience and hope everyone takes action to stay safe!

We hope you’ll be as excited and a little surprised as we are when we share more information in the next Devcon update over the coming weeks 🌎. This update will be available a little earlier than previous years, so check back often!
