Do I need car insurance to rent a car?
If you own a car and have car insurance, that insurance also applies when you rent a car. Your insurance will protect you in a rental car just as much as it does your own car. Many popular credit cards also have free rental car insurance against damage and theft, which can provide additional protection.
But what if you don’t own a car or don’t have car insurance? Without insurance to cover damages and liability issues, you could be at risk of financial disaster.
Do I need car insurance to rent a car?
In most states, you don’t need car insurance to rent a car. That’s because most states have laws that require rental car companies to provide a minimum amount of liability insurance. Even if you do not have your own insurance, you will still be covered by applicable liability insurance.
Keep in mind that liability insurance only covers property damage and injuries to others if you were at fault for the accident. This does not cover anything that happens to the rental car. This requires conflict and comprehensive coverage. You can purchase it through a rental company. Or, better yet, pay with a credit card that offers collision and theft coverage.
Some states have different rules regarding rental car liability insurance. In Missouri and Utah, rental companies are only required to provide liability insurance if the driver does not have liability insurance. In this case, you can still rent a car without insurance.
However, in California and Texas, rental companies are not required to provide liability insurance. If you drive a rental car in any state, you must have liability insurance or obtain it through the rental car company. Credit card insurance alone is not enough to cover your rental car. Credit cards do not include liability insurance.

Rental car companies may not check if you have insurance. But it is illegal to drive without it. If you get pulled over, you risk losing a ticket, and potentially huge bills if you’re found to be at fault for the accident.
Minimum rental coverage may not be sufficient.
In most states, you can rent a car without insurance, but that doesn’t mean it’s a good idea. Remember that rental companies only need to meet legal minimum standards. It varies from state to state, but usually not.
For example, New York’s minimum amounts for liability coverage are:
- A minimum of $25,000 for bodily injuries that do not result in death and $50,000 for injuries that do not result in death.
- Two people receive at least $50,000 for bodily injuries that do not result in death and $100,000 for injuries that do not result in death.
- At least $10,000 for damage to the other party’s car or property.
If a serious accident occurs, medical bills can easily exceed $25,000. And with today’s car prices, $10,000 may not be nearly enough to cover the cost of repair or replacement.
Imagine you were in an accident and hit another driver’s car. Last year, the average new car price was over $48,000. If your insurance limit is $10,000, you could suffer tens of thousands of dollars in damage.
Protect yourself when renting a car
When renting a car, it is best to have adequate insurance. At a minimum, you should have sufficient liability insurance to cover the potential costs of an accident and coverage for the rental car itself.
Drivers who are already insured through a good car insurance company are covered. If you don’t have car insurance, there are a few ways to get insurance for your car rental.
- Rental car company: This is the most convenient option, but it can be expensive.
- Third Party Rental Car Insurance: Companies that offer these include Allianz, Bonzah, and Travel Guard.
- Non-Owned Car Insurance: Liability insurance for people who don’t own a car but drive often. Unless you rent a car regularly, you’re probably better off choosing one of the first two options.
To find the right option, first figure out exactly what insurance you need. If you already have a credit card that covers damage and theft to your rental car, you can only purchase liability insurance. If you don’t have a credit card with rental car insurance, you’ll need a policy that includes liability, collision, and comprehensive coverage.
Once you know what type of insurance you need, check with your rental car company to compare prices with third-party providers. Prices and plans vary, so take some time to compare your options.
Insurance is added to the cost of car rental, but it is well worth purchasing. With how costly an accident can be, you don’t want to put yourself at risk.
