Elon Musk announces X algorithm changes, faces backlash

Elon Musk is facing widespread backlash after announcing upcoming changes to the X social media algorithm that will promote informative or educational content over other types of content.

According to Musk, the planned changes are a response to “too much negative reaction” on social media sites. The entrepreneur wrote in a social media post on January 3:

“Our goal is to maximize the number of seconds of no-regret user time. There are too many negative aspects being pushed that technically increase user time, but do not increase user time without regret.”

The changes come just days after Musk reportedly removed premium features from several accounts due to an online feud over immigrant visas.

Several right-wing social media influencers began publicly attacking Musk in response to the post. It argued that there was no shortage of talent in the United States and that immigration rates should be reduced.

After a heated debate between the two sides, right-wing influencers accused Musk of removing access to premium features and monetization.

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin urged Musk to ensure freedom of speech on the platform and not ban users for disagreement or expressing views. Buterin wrote:

“Respecting free speech is easy when we agree with the speech, and difficult when we think it’s terrible. But the argument for respecting free speech is somehow the same: Today, Banhammer is controlled by one group; Tomorrow’s group will be controlled by another group.”

The latest feud between Musk and X users follows a fight between Musk and the Brazilian government over censorship that culminated in a ban on the X platform in the South American country.
