v1.0 eth2 testnet — Toledo and Pyrmont
This week, client developers led by protolambda toledo devnet — 16k validator testnet with v1.0 mainnet configuration. You can sync your favorite nodes to this testnet, but you will not be able to make validator deposits since it uses a modified and permissioned deposit contract. Toledo is intended for initial v1.0 testing and ongoing developer experimentation.
We are aiming for release next week. Piermont — A 100,000 validator testnet that mimics mainnet conditions as closely as possible. Once Pyrmont is launched and stable, the testnet will be released to the community. Pyrmont can serve as a final venue for testing mainnet software releases and hardware configurations ahead of mainnet launch.
Because Pyrmont uses mainnet configuration, it follows the same (slow) activation queuing mechanism that you would experience on mainnet. Please be a good citizen and only make one or two validator deposits. This will help us keep queue times reasonable over the coming weeks and provide a productive testbed for all users.
Pyrmont will be supported at least through eth2 mainnet genesis. From there, we will consider available options for building a long-term testnet with better stability and UX properties. This may include faster queue processing and much higher minimum discharge balances.
But until then, enjoy Pyrmont!
