We are always watching the on-chain competition, but sometimes we need to help.
Offchain Labs, Core Team Ethereum Layer-2 network expansion decisionWe discovered several security issues in the latest testnet version. optimismIt is a separate Ethereum layer-2 scaling network created by OP Labs.
The issue was detailed on Friday after the fix was implemented. blog post Posted by Offchain Labs co-founder Ed Felton. A potential vulnerability was discovered in Optimism’s system for contesting potentially fraudulent transactions, so it may have been hijacked by a malicious actor, Felton explained.
“We believe that user funds will be at very high risk if the current protocol is deployed on mainnet,” Offchain Labs told OP Labs in a late March message, adding that “example exploit code” was included for informational purposes only. Yes. .
Arbitrum and Optimism are the so-called. Ethereum Rollupis intended to provide lower transaction costs to users by bundling transactions in batches and then delivering them to Ethereum in processed form. Within that class of scaling solutions, both Layer 2s are classified as “optimistic” rollups, which assume that all transactions they process are legitimate.
To prevent malicious actors from abusing the optimistic nature of Arbitrum and Optimism, both networks utilize: fraud proof. Effectively, the security model provides a window for network participants to challenge and validate transactions through a rules-based process.
The issue identified by Offchain Labs relates to the time allotted for participants to “move” to dispute transactions through Optimism’s anti-fraud system. According to Felton’s post, malicious actors could abuse this timing to their advantage, tricking the system into accepting fraudulent chain records or preventing the system from accepting correct chain records.
“The OP protocol originally deployed on the testnet was vulnerable to this type of traitor attack because it allowed traitors to obtain time credits they were not entitled to,” he explained. “As a result, anti-fraud systems did not improve security assurance.”
Offchain Labs’ involvement in Optimism ensures that Ethereum Layer 2 continues to “stain.” The data structures introduced in the latest Ethereum upgrade allow Layer 2 to further reduce transaction costs through a dedicated, low-cost space for publishing data to Ethereum.
From an adoption perspective, Optimism and Arbitrum are the two largest among Ethereum layer 2. According to the dunes dashboardFor example, Arbitrum and Optimism processed 1.7 million and 600,000 transactions respectively on Monday. Meanwhile, 1.1 million transactions occurred on the Ethereum mainnet.
While the security issue could have been a headache for users, blocking users from Optimism’s testnet ultimately means that no one will be affected. An OP Labs spokesperson had this to say about Layer 2, where similar architectures take care of each other: decryption Offchain Labs’ recent comments still have a lot of value.
“We always appreciate it when teams take the time to review our testnet code,” a spokesperson said in a statement. “This is an important part of the development process.”
