Ethereum.org is an educational website and portal about Ethereum. For many people, this is their first contact with Ethereum, where they find their first wallet or Dapp to use, and as a resource to start learning or level up. knowledge.

To best accomplish these purposes, we ethereum.org translation program As of July 2019, we’ve been working to make our site’s content available to everyone, including the more than 6 billion non-English speakers.

By providing educational content and required onboarding pages about Ethereum in as many languages ​​as possible, we are making it as easy as possible for everyone to learn about Ethereum and become an Ethereum user or developer, regardless of which language they speak.

As a result of these efforts, non-English pageviews have steadily increased as more translated content has been added to the site, and visits to ethereum.org in languages ​​other than English now account for more than a quarter of the site’s total traffic. It occupies.

To localize content across the space, onboard new contributors to the program, encourage translations into less active languages, and raise awareness of the importance of giving back to our contributor community, we launched our first ethereum.net in August of this year. org Translatathon. Here’s how to proceed:

What is a Translatathon?

Translatathon is a translation competition similar to a hackathon.

You don’t need any coding skills or technical background to participate in the Translatathon. Anyone who is bilingual and has basic knowledge of Ethereum can participate.

This is also an event where participants can translate website content to learn about Ethereum while helping make this content more accessible and compete for prizes at the same time!

Below is a brief overview of how the ethereum.org Translatathon is structured.

  • Application period: 2 weeks

    • Participant support and team building

  • Translation period: 1 week

    • Participants translating content ethereum.org project on Crowdin
    • They compete against each other in two categories: team and individual
    • Machine translation is banned!

  • 1 week evaluation and QA period

    • All participants were assessed and given a translation score.
    • The winner was determined based on his or her own opinion. Total number of words translated their multiplication multiplier score

What happened?

In total, the Translatathon received 621 applications, with 217 participants translated into 56 languages ​​during the translation period.

The total amount of content translated during the competition period was 1.47 million words, making August the most productive month for the translation program (previous high: 497,000 words).

The amount of content translated during the one-week translation period is equivalent to approximately 50% of the total content translated in the entire program in 2022.

Translation activity in the past 12 months

The goals we aim to achieve through Translatathon are as follows:

Raising awareness of the importance of content localization – Although this is a non-measurable and never-ending process, we have heard from individuals interested in participating in similar initiatives and some projects looking to start or improve their localization process.

Onboard new participants to your program – A total of 486 new members joined in one month. ethereum.org project on CrowdinMany participants and winners have become new contributors.

Provide incentives for translations into less active languages – Participants were translated into 56 different languages, including 7 new languages ​​not yet available on the website. In total, we have over 10,000 translated words in 27 languages, so we’ll be adding lots of new translated content to the site in the coming weeks.

Giving Back to Contributors – More than 70% of all Translatathon participants (155 out of 217) were eligible to win some type of prize, bringing the total prize pool to $30,000 + other prizes.

The general distribution of active languages ​​was very diverse, with a total of 56 languages ​​and 31 languages ​​with two or more participants.

Based on the number of activities and participants, some languages ​​stood out.

  • Turkish: 20 translators, 167,000 translated words*
  • Indonesian: 8 translators, 196,000 translated words
  • spanish: 15 translators, 116,000 translated words

Other most active languages ​​include Polish (63,000 translated words), German (59,000 translated words), Russian (58,000 translated words), Traditional Chinese (15 translators), and Persian (13 translators).
