The game has to find you at the right time. Well, this Ethereum game found me in the bathroom.
My favorite gaming experiences have come when the game is fun and fits perfectly into my life. Think Bloodborne Find yourself stuck inside during the pandemic or a co-op gem You need two things When you wanted to bond with your partner.
Guild of Guardians meets you during natural breaks in your daily life, whether it’s taking a suspiciously long bathroom break at work, waiting for the bus, or cooking dinner. This mobile fantasy game is complex enough to keep you interested, but thankfully has a gameplay loop that’s quick enough to pick up and put down easily.
Fight through the dungeon
Guild of Guardians is a mobile trading card game for iOS and Android that combines the roguelite and auto-battle genres for an addictive and convenient gameplay experience.
As you progress through the dungeons, you can complete each dungeon up to three times to gain maximum experience and loot to continually upgrade your squad. Every dungeon has several rooms filled with enemies that you must fight to get the final reward. Likewise, each room features a variety of enemies, loot boxes, and strange neutral zones where you can heal or level up your gear.
You can initially deploy three Guardians, and gradually add more Guardians as you level up. These range from tanks to mages to support guardians, and it’s important to make sure your squad has a balanced talent mix. Once you’ve selected your Guardian party, choose your formation carefully, place your tank on the front line, and click Battle.
Inspired by auto-battle games like Riot’s Teamfight Tactics (TFT), Guardians will automatically fight for you. But in Guild of Guardians, each person chooses when to cast their ultimate ability. This means being passive and at least enough to play during natural lulls in the day while still being engaged. small fist.
As you progress through each dungeon’s rooms, you’ll be prompted to select runes that can give you some buffs in the future. Sometimes you have the misfortune of picking up a “Curse of Fate” that buffs your enemies and makes them more powerful. I adjust my strategy based on my squad and the runes I choose, giving me plenty of variety for each dungeon run.
This entire loop doesn’t take more than a few minutes at a time and involves a lot of downtime as you put your phone down, get on with your real life, and then come back. That’s why it’s perfect for a natural break during the day.
My only complaint about the core gameplay is that the “domain synergies” and how they interact with each other are hidden. Even once you look it up, it doesn’t feel entirely clear or unique. Having multiple characters in the same “domain” seems to buff your team slightly, but the buffs are fairly similar for each domain, so it feels a bit redundant.
In other auto battles, this is often the most interesting part of the game. Therefore, I would like to see Guild of Guardians develop some complexity, such as synergies that grant healing, stun abilities, or other unique features.
Spice up your party
After completing a few dungeons, you’ll have gathered enough resources to build a team that suits you.
Guild of Guardians has a fairly extensive character leveling and equipment system that takes as much care as dungeon clearing. Each Guardian has their own level, which goes up to 30, which affects their health, attack, and defense, as well as the skills they can unlock.
Additionally, each character can be equipped with equipment such as armor, wizard hat, and axe to increase certain stats. It all feels pretty intuitive, but even when it doesn’t, the game thankfully holds your hand.
Up to this point I have never interacted with any cryptocurrency or NFT elements. I played the game every day for almost a week and it played just fine even without the Web3 component. However, when you log in to your Immutable Passport wallet, you can enjoy new benefits using simple Gmail login options.
Most notable is the ability to “Ascend” Guardians, which gives them an overall boost of 30%. This will convert your Guardian into an NFT. Ethereum network expansion immutable zkEVMso you can sell them secondary market.
Currently, 40 Ascension Seals cost $6.99 to purchase the resources needed to advance as a Guardian, but you can also earn them by ranking high on the leaderboard. The number of Seals needed will vary depending on the Guardian’s popularity, but from what I’ve seen, 31 Ascension Seals is adequate for most purple rare Guardians.
Before doing this, Guild of Guardians game director Chris Clay encouraged me to level up my guardians as much as possible during a Zoom call. Ascending your Guardian should be the final step in strengthening your Guardian and a way to lock in the value of your investment in the game.
As someone who has invested countless hours (and painful amounts of money) into games that give me nothing in return, I love the Web3 element – the idea of being able to sell my assets when I decide I don’t want to play them anymore. This game makes it possible.
Guild of Guardians has an addictive gameplay loop. At the end, you’ll dive into the dungeon to get all the loot. Didn’t you make it there? Then use the loot you can find to level up your squad, craft gear, and unlock new Guardians to take you to the next level.
Now I don’t doomscroll on Twitter when I’m sitting on my throne. I’m leveling up my Guardians, fighting skeletons in dungeons, and hoping to one day ascend my entire party in the Guild of Guardians.
