Hacker transfers 800 Ethereum (ETH) to Tornado Cash.

The Kronos Research hacker has resurfaced on the internet after transferring 800 Ethereum (ETH), worth about $2.4 million, to Tornado Cash.

The move comes at a tense time for the cryptocurrency mixer protocol, which is currently engaged in a legal battle with the U.S. Department of Justice over charges of facilitating money laundering.

Kronos Research Hackers ETH to Tornado Cash

These significant ETH transfers were identified by PeckShield and tagged “Hacker 4.” Notably, this transfer is part of a larger pattern by Kronos Research hackers who previously participated in a $7.3 million influx into Tornado Cash in early May and a $117 million transaction into Poloniex last November.

The resurgence of on-chain activity by hackers conflicts with recent trends in the cryptocurrency sector. According to the report, the frequency of cryptocurrency hacks has decreased by more than 65% in the past month. However, the financial impact of these breaches remains very high, highlighting ongoing challenges in ensuring security.

“KronosResearch Hacker 4 transferred 800 ETH (equivalent to approximately $2.4 million) to Tornado Cash,” PeckShield warned.

The Justice Department’s stance has been uncompromising, especially in the ongoing case against Tornado Cash co-founder Roman Storm. Prosecutors adamantly argued that Storm’s activities went beyond freedom of expression and involved serious criminal activity, including operating without required licenses and violating OFAC sanctions.

These developments raise important questions about the future of cryptocurrency regulation and the balance between innovation and security. As the legal proceedings against Tornado Cash continue, the cryptocurrency community is on high alert.
