Superhero movies have been huge box office successes for years, but video games have been slow to catch up. Maybe the studio isn’t trying to measure up to the same standards as the Batman Arkham games or the Spider-Man games. Maybe they’re worried it’ll end up like Marvel’s Avengers, a live-service co-op superhero game that came and went a few years ago.
Whatever the reason, there haven’t been many good superhero games in years, with the exception of Marvel’s Spider-Man series, which released its latest installment last year. But now we have a variety of Marvel Comics games coming from a variety of studios, many of whom have incredible talent and track records.
Keep in mind that some of these games are quite the escape. None of them have a definite release date, videos, screenshots, confirmed platforms, or even a confirmed title. It’s just an official announcement. But that’s enough to start dreaming again.
Take a look at all the upcoming Marvel games with all the known details.
Marvel’s Wolverine
Of all the games on this list, Marvel’s Wolverine is the longest-running game in the world. Continue in 2021. After getting his start at Marvel with Spider-Man, Insomniac proved its expertise with Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Spider-Man 2. The Ratchet & Clank studio is perfectly positioned to expand into other characters.
insomnia quoted Wolverine’s drive to work is quite different from Spider-Man’s, as both “feel a strong compulsion to defend those who can’t do so.” Compared to the more lithe and acrobatic Spidey, Logan is a brash, burly ball covered in hair and spikes, so we expect gameplay to be quite different.
The studio was hacked in 2023, revealing unannounced information and some early gameplay footage. But if you look closely, remember that it’s an imperfect asset that may never see the light of day. The final product may vary significantly.
Like other games from Insomniac, expect this one to be a PlayStation exclusive for a few years before coming to PC.
marbles blade
Arkane Studios, known for Dishonored, Prey, and Deathloop, surprised us last fall by announcing Blade. This will be an action-adventure title that follows the origin story of Dhampir Eric Brooks, better known as Blade. Arkane has said little about the game, but the studio’s previous games have relied heavily on limited space exploration, gameplay that allows for player improvisation, and a narrative driven by player choices.
Working on a licensed character like Blade may change Arkane’s priorities somewhat, but we’d be very surprised if they suddenly dropped everything we knew. We expect to see Marvel’s Blade on Xbox Series X and S and PC. Whether it will appear on PlayStation 5 is currently unknown, as parent company Microsoft’s cross-platform strategy has been inconsistent.
Marvel’s Black Panther
Marvel’s Black Panther from Electronic Arts studio Cliffhanger Games. Don’t worry if you don’t know the studio name. This is a studio created specifically to develop this game. EA didn’t go into specifics, but we’re hoping for an open-world game set primarily in Wakanda.
The studio is committed to “delivering an authentic, authentic Black Panther experience for fans, giving them more agency and narrative control than they’ve ever experienced in a story-driven video game. Wakanda is a rich superhero sandbox, and our mission is to Developing an epic world for players who love Black Panther and want to explore the world of Wakanda as much as we do.” According to studio head Kevin Stephens:.
The idea of having more control over the story than any other narrative game is a big promise, and I hope EA and Cliffhanger make good on this idea.
Marvel’s Black Panther/Captain America game
This is definitely a strange game, but we’re very happy about it. The fact that Uncharted 2: Among Thieves director Amy Hennig is developing the game at Skydance Media is enough to put this title in the spotlight. Loosely based on the “Captain America/Black Panther: Flags of the Fathers” storyline, the game is set not in modern times, but during World War II, before Steve Rogers’ long hibernation.
Steve will become Cap, but T’Challa won’t be born yet for another 40 years. So instead, you play as Azzuri, who at the time donned the Black Panther mantle. You can also play as Gabriel Jones of Cap’s Howling Commandos and Nanali, the leader of the Wakandan spy network. The game is said to be a “narrative-driven, blockbuster action-adventure game.” Initial announcement.
untitled iron man game
Along with the Black Panther game, Electronic Arts is also developing an Iron Man game. EA says the game will be a “single-player, third-person, action-adventure” title. Leading the team is Olivier Proulx, who previously worked on Eidos Montreal’s 2021 Guardians of the Galaxy game. This was one of the real hits of the year.
The game inspired by the Iron Man movies was released over a decade ago to middling reviews, after which Marvel seemed to cool off. I hope this Iron Man game is much better.
Marvel’s Spider-Man 3
Spider-Man 2 (shown) came out six months ago, so don’t expect this game until around 2029 or 2030. Insomniac has been developing excellent games like Ratchet & Clank and Sunset Overdrive for years, but 2018’s Spider-Man showed that the studio is a household name among gamers and that Batman isn’t the only superhero capable of supporting hit games.
Last fall saw the release of Spider-Man 2, which improved on the original in many ways and is one of the biggest reasons I now own a PlayStation 5. We know very little about this game other than the fact that it exists. At least there are three great examples between Spider-Man, Spider-Man 2, and Spider-Man: Miles Morales, which remind us that Insomniac knows its stuff when it comes to webheads.
Marvel’s Venom: Deadly Guardian
One of the games in development that we learned about when Insomniac’s data leaked last year was a Venom spinoff from the Spider-Man series. Venom played a significant role in Spider-Man 2, not only serving as a rift between himself and his best friend Harry, but also representing the stress and frustration that Peter was suppressing to do his job as Spidey.
However, while both Harry and Peter found redemption, Venom not so much. We’re curious to see how Insomniac turns Venom, the symbiote we met in Spider-Man 2, into the anti-hero we know from his comics. However, the game is still in early development, so we don’t expect to see it for some time. It is expected to be a PlayStation exclusive title.
Hackers have also revealed apparent plans for an X-Men game developed by Insomniac, but there’s little to go further than that at this point, so we’ll leave it at that. Suffice it to say that there will be plenty of Marvel games coming out in the coming years.
