How can I detect transactions submitted with Bitcoin on the L2 Lightning Network?

How is Lightning connected to the Bitcoin blockchain?
When a Lightning channel is opened or closed, there is a corresponding transaction on the Bitcoin blockchain. From what I’ve read, the initiating transaction includes a 2/2 multi-signature output. It is indistinguishable from similar output produced for reasons other than opening a lightning channel.
Between these events, there are usually numerous Lightning transactions using Lightning channels that leave no trace on the Bitcoin blockchain.
