Kabosu, the legendary Shiba Inu who became the face of the meme coin Dogecoin (DOGE), passed away peacefully in Japan today at the age of approximately 18.

A farewell party for beloved dogs will be held on May 26 at Flower Kaori in Kotsunomori, Narita City.
“Today, Kabosu, a shared friend and inspiration to our community, passed peacefully in her arms,” X’s official Dogecoin account said. “The impact this one dog has on the world is immeasurable.”
Dogecoin price itself seemed pessimistic on the news, plummeting more than 3% to $0.1616 as of 7:32 a.m. EST. Shiba Inu (SHIB) also seemed to fall in line, losing 5.5% and trading at $0.00002422.

The Birth of a Viral Internet Sensation
Kabosu first came to public attention in 2010 after Sato posted a photo of his newly adopted dog on his blog. A specific image of Kabosu wearing an expression that can only be described as a mixture of curiosity and skepticism went viral.

This image gave birth to the “Doge” meme. This photo, along with the broken English text, has become a cornerstone of Internet culture. The meme’s popularity grew in 2013, making it the official logo in 2013. DogecoinIt is the world’s largest meme coin and the 8th largest cryptocurrency with a market capitalization of $23.3 billion.
