Japanese Exchange DMM Bitcoin Hacked, Over $300 Million in BTC

Today, DMM Bitcoin, a large Japanese cryptocurrency exchange, reported a serious security breach resulting in the loss of 4,502.9 BTC, currently worth over $300 million. The incident occurred around 1:26 p.m. and involved unauthorized access to an exchange wallet.

DMM Bitcoin said in an official statement that measures have been taken to strengthen security by imposing restrictions on certain services to prevent further unauthorized access. These restrictions include pausing the opening of new accounts, processing cryptocurrency withdrawals, and accepting new purchase orders for spot trading. However, delays may occur for existing limit orders and Japanese Yen withdrawals.

DMM Bitcoin stated that it is committed to fully securing the Bitcoin deposits of all its customers. “With the support of our group companies, we will raise an equivalent amount of BTC that has been leaked, so all of your Bitcoin (BTC) deposits are fully insured,” the announcement said.

The exchange said, “We deeply apologize for any inconvenience caused to our customers,” and is actively investigating the violation. DMM Bitcoin said it would provide updates as more information becomes available.
