- Kiln, the Ethereum merge testnet launched in early 2022, will close the week of September 12, 2022.
- Ropsten and Rinkeby are also being deprecated and are scheduled to shut down in Q4 2022 and Q3 2023, respectively.
- Users and developers will need to migrate to Goerli & Sepolia in the near future, which will continue to be maintained and upgraded to reflect changes to the Ethereum mainnet.

Prior to merging the existing testnet, Kiln, which was released for Ethereum testing purposes, will be shut down after the merge. During the week of September 12, 2022. Anyone can run a node on the network, but bootnodes and validators maintained by clients and test teams, as well as infrastructure providers, are turned off at that point. This follows the timeline outlined in the deprecation notice linked above.
Ropsten and Rinkeby are also considered deprecated, with end dates in Q4 2022 and Q2 2023, respectively. Until then, the networks will remain active, but infrastructure providers may gradually restrict or eliminate access to these networks over a shorter timeline.
Users and developers will need to migrate to Goerli and/or Sepolia, both of which are expected to be maintained and upgraded in the near future in line with Ethereum mainnet changes.
There will be other announcements on this blog prior to the closure of Ropsten and Rinkeby.
