One thing I noticed about the Korean financial stocks covered in this post is as follows. They tend to have single-digit trailing or leading P/Es and high single-digit forward dividend yields.. To me, this seems worth taking a closer look at the sector and the individual stocks within it. Especially with the real estate turmoil in China (the financial sector will also have significant exposure).

Korea reimposes short selling ban until June… ‘Fair playing field’ (Reuters) November 2023
South Korea’s government will reimpose a ban on short selling from Monday until at least June to create a “level playing field” for individual and institutional investors, financial authorities said on Sunday.
The ban on trading related to stocks of companies with large market capitalization included in the KOSPI 200 and KOSDAQ 150 stock indices was lifted in May 2021. Restrictions remained in place for most other stocks.
Korea bans short selling by 2024 (FT) November 2023 $
The Kospi stock index rose as much as 4% after regulators promised to investigate ‘blatant’ short-selling by institutional investors.
South Korean stocks surged on Monday morning after the Financial Supervisory Service imposed a blanket ban on short selling to appease individual investors ahead of next year’s general election.

Futures for some South Korean companies are trading at discounts of up to 6% to spot prices as investors try to hedge potential risks, according to exchange data.
