New Scan: News Headlines Search

December 16, 2024

I have a scan I’ve wanted for a long time and several people have asked me about it over the years. This is a scan that finds stocks with specific news/headlines. I finally made those scans over the weekend and they are available now (accessible under the News Scans category on the Stock Scans by Category/Type page)

It’s very simple and basic for now, because I wanted to release the simplest version possible to see if people use it and like it. At the top of that scan filter you’ll see two fields: “Search Terms” and “Earliest Publication Date.”

The scan looks for: Items that exactly match your search term in the news headline (SwingTradeBot doesn’t have the content of news articles, just the headlines.). The search will run from headlines published on the date selected in the “Earliest publication date” field to the current date.

You’ll see the resulting headline at the bottom of the page. Here are some results from a search for “FDA”:

reason I resisted making this scan for so long because it has so many caveats. (I listed it on the forum a few weeks ago). Some of them are:

  • All SwingTradeBot gets is headlines, and even then. It’s missing a lot of features like upgrades and downgrades, as they are (mostly) available in Yahoo Finance.
  • Just me We bring you news several times a day. And it’s not practical/possible to do more than that. This is not a real-time news search
  • Things may be expressed in strange or unexpected ways.. For example, an earnings release might include “Revenue,” “Financials,” or “Qx Results.” So you may have to get creative with your search.
  • Many media outlets these days prefer clickbait-like headlines. Headlines often don’t display actual keywords.. Instead of “Company
  • A company may issue a press release weeks before the actual event. You may not be able to take action immediately.
  • For those who use it The Australian and Canadian versions of SwingTradeBot unfortunately have access to fewer headlines. Better than the American version.
Nonetheless, I think this scan could be useful. There were a few searches I wanted and now I can get results quickly through scanning. they:
  • Stocks that recently received FDA approval (I used “FDA” as a search term instead of a search term like “FDA approved” because the headlines might not match exactly if I used a longer term. In fact, one of the headlines was “FDA Approved”. PMA approved…”)
  • Stocks with an upcoming or recent secondary offering. Again, I used shorter search terms (‘offer’ instead of ‘secondary offer’) to increase my chances of finding headlines that fit my intent but didn’t exactly match ‘secondary offer’.
In either case, I generally won’t trade on news days. Rather, I like to add those kinds of stocks to my watchlist and wait for them to give me one of their preferences (e.g. Calm After Storm or Non-ADX Pullback). And for secondary offerings, we wait until they are actually priced and completed.

Let me know what you think about the scan in the comments. And how you are using it. There are a few things you can do to improve this, but you don’t want to invest time into these things if no one will use them.

  • Smarter, more complex queries. So you can do things like find headlines with a list of all words (1 AND 2 AND 3) or with a list of random words (1 OR 2 OR 3).
  • You can choose to include news searches in your combo scan. You can then search for stocks using extended breakouts and headlines of interest, for example.
