Prosecutors recommend at least 17 years in prison for OneCoin lawyer
Mark Scott’s lawyers had proposed a prison sentence of five years, compared to the more than 17 years the U.S. attorney had suggested for the “abhorrent” actions.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office has suggested that a sentence of at least 17 years be “fair and appropriate” for the attorney responsible for money laundering through the OneCoin cryptocurrency scheme.
In documents submitted to the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York on January 19, U.S. Attorney Damian Williams recommended “a minimum of 17 years in prison” for Mark Scott, a lawyer who laundered millions of dollars through OneCoin. According to prosecutors, Scott ‘chose to work full time’ laundering the funds of ‘Cryptoqueen’ Ruja Ignatova, who co-founded OneCoin with Karl Sebastian Greenwood in 2014.
“(Scott) engaged in incredibly serious and sophisticated criminal conduct, for which he took no responsibility and showed absolutely no remorse,” the Jan. 19 filing states. “His punishment must be consistent with the severity of his crime.”
