We put another budget-focused smartphone to the test for cryptocurrency mining VerusCoin (VRSC). This time it is Samsung Galaxy A14 5G. After the recent disappointment that the Samsung Galaxy A13 5G has a 32-bit OS and cannot be used for mining, we were a little worried about the A14 5G, but still, after seeing it, we decided to take the risk. Total price deal for Verizon Samsung Galaxy A14 5G, 64GB, Black – Prepaid Smartphone (Locked) on Amazon temporarily dropped to $59 USD, but now seems to be back to $79.99 USD. Specs-wise, the A14 5G looked interesting and the good price drop made me pull the trigger, but the question is whether it could deliver. Read below to find out what you can expect from the Galaxy A14 5G if you plan to use it for VRSC mining.

When I received the Samsung Galaxy A14 5G and opened it, it seemed a little bulky. The device was announced earlier this year and is a large smartphone with a 6.6-inch display. But it seems there are two versions. One is Mediatek Dimensity 700 (which is what we got) and the other is with Exynos 1330 chipset, which will perform slightly better than what we got as a result. The Mediatek Dimensity 700 (7nm) chipset has 8 ARM CPU cores (2x 2.2GHz Cortex-A76 and 6x 2.0GHz Cortex-A55) and Android 13, and the good news here is that unlike the A13 5G model, it has a 64-bit OS for cryptocurrency mining. It’s suitable. At least that’s good news, but unfortunately the results aren’t exactly what we expected from the device.

And while the Galaxy A14 5G works for cryptocurrency mining and offers decent hashrate mining VerusCoin, it is definitely not going to be the best choice in terms of price and performance. It initially peaked at a higher hashrate, but then stabilized at around 3.8 MH/s, and due to the initially fluctuating hashrate, we ran it for quite some time just to be sure. This performance is paired with a power usage of about 3.8 watts measured at the wall, making it slower and less efficient than other devices we tested, not to mention more expensive, so it’s not the best choice. We expected to see better performance from it. Perhaps a version with better specs using the Exynos chipset would be more interesting for cryptocurrency mining, although it would be more expensive and harder to find.
