Tech Titans Gathering: IBM and Meta Lead 50+ Organizations in New AI Alliance

As AI companies compete for market dominance, a group of tech giants led by IBM and Mehta have formed a new organization called the AI Alliance to cooperate rather than oppose each other. The companies announced Tuesday their goal to support transparent innovation and responsible development in artificial intelligence.

The AI Alliance aims to prioritize safety, collaboration, diversity, economic opportunity and benefits for all, IBM and Meta said in a joint statement. The group represents more than $80 billion in combined annual research and development funding, according to the alliance.

Although many members support open source development, a model is not a requirement for membership.

“The AI Alliance brings together researchers, developers and companies to share tools and knowledge that can help us all advance, whether our models are public or not,” said President of Global Affairs at Meta Nick Clegg. “We look forward to working with our partners to advance the cutting edge of AI and help everyone build responsibly.”

More than 50 technology companies have joined IBM and Meta in the AI Alliance, including AMD, Dell Technologies, Red Hat, Sony Group, Hugging Face, Stability AI, Oracle, and the Linux Foundation.

“The advances we continue to see in AI are a testament to open innovation and collaboration across our community of creators, scientists, academics and business leaders,” said Arvind Krishna, IBM Chairman and CEO. added. “This is a critical moment that defines the future of AI.”

According to IBM and Meta, the AI Alliance will establish a governance and technical oversight committee dedicated to advancing AI projects and establishing standards and guidelines, and will work with governments, nonprofits, and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) working in the AI industry. I did. .

Seeking academic participation, the AI Alliance includes CERN, NASA, Cleveland Clinic, Cornell University, Dartmouth, Imperial College London, University of California, Berkeley, University of Illinois, University of Notre Dame, University of Tokyo, and Yale University.

“Open innovation goes a long way toward ensuring equitable access to and collaboration in AI and rooting this technology in principles that adhere to the strongest standards of diversity, trust, and creativity,” said Kevin Murphy, NASA’s Chief Science Data Officer. “It’s essential,” he said.

Meta has championed open source AI models and responsible development, but last November the company disbanded its AI team to decentralize and streamline AI development.

The AI Alliance was found to be absent from leading AI developers Microsoft, Google, ChatGPT developer OpenAI, and Claude AI’s Anthropic. Last July, they announced the launch of The Frontier Forum, their own group dedicated to responsible AI.

Earlier this year, the Biden administration met with major AI developers including OpenAI, Microsoft, Google, Amazon, Anthropic, Meta, and Inflection. Signed a pledge to develop artificial intelligence responsibly. In September, NVIDIA, IBM, Scale AI, Adobe, IBM, Palantir, Salesforce, and Stability AI signed the pledge.
