Asian stocks traded subdued on Tuesday, with the dollar lurking near a five-month low as cooling U.S. inflation raised expectations the Federal Reserve would soon cut interest rates.

Investors were still digesting data released Friday that showed U.S. prices fell in November for the first time in three and a half years, underscoring the durability of the economy.

MSCI’s largest index of Asia-Pacific stocks outside Japan rose 0.18% and is expected to rise 1.6% this year. Japan’s Nikkei index fell 0.07%, but rose 27% this year, maintaining the best performance among Asian stock markets.
