US authorities plan to transfer SBF to California prison: Report

Officials have reportedly begun preparing to send former FTX CEO Sam “SBF” Bankman-Fried from New York to a California federal facility near his parents’ home.

According to a May 22 Wall Street Journal report, Bankman-Fried was allowed to serve most of his sentence at the Federal Correctional Institution in Mendota, despite requests from his attorneys to remain in the New York area during his appeal. Last March, a federal judge sentenced SBF to 25 years in prison after pleading guilty to seven felonies.

Bankman-Fried has been imprisoned at the Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) in Brooklyn since a judge revoked his bond in August 2023 before the case went to trial. After his sentencing hearing, the former FTX CEO requested to remain in a Brooklyn jail “to facilitate access to appellate counsel” as part of his notice to appeal his conviction and sentence.

This is a developing story and additional information will be added as it becomes available.
