What are the deadlines and how to apply?
Some Coloradans could soon receive a rebate of about $300, but they’ll have to apply before the June 30 deadline. Colorado’s food tax rebate is specifically for low-income Coloradans and aims to expand financial assistance to increase the economic stability of our communities.
Colorado’s Food Tax Rebate: Who Gets It?
Authorities in Boulder, Colorado, began accepting applications for the food tax rebate program on March 1. The program, which launched on February 15, aims to help residents pay for soaring food prices. With inflation still high, many people are struggling to afford essentials like groceries.
To receive a food tax refund, you must be 62 years of age or older for all of 2023, have a disability, or have a child under 18 in 2023. Applicants must also reside in Boulder in 2023. Rebates are available for the entire year of 2023.
People without permanent shelter may also be eligible for a refund if they provide documentation supporting that they are receiving services from a city-recognized homeless services agency.
Applicants must also meet income requirements. For example, an individual’s income threshold is up to $46,500. For a family of two, it’s $50,150. For a family of three, that’s $59,800. For a family of four, it’s $66,400, and for a family of eight, it’s $87,650.
Applicants must use income figures from their 2023 federal tax forms. If the applicant is not required to file a tax return, gross income from all sources must be used. Eligible individuals will receive $104 in food tax rebates from Colorado, and households with one or more members will receive up to $318.
You can apply for a Colorado food tax refund on the city’s website. People who received a rebate last year will probably receive this year’s application in the mail. Applications containing documents submitted after the deadline will not be accepted.
It’s not a new program
Food tax rebates in Colorado are nothing new. It has been in existence since 1967. In 2023, the city approved 1,093 applications (out of about 1,200 received), including 679 seniors, 267 family members and the rest with disabilities.
“Boulder has operated a food tax rebate program since 1967, helping low-income community members reduce the financial burden of city sales taxes on food,” according to the program’s website.
