What determines the reason for the private key in WIF format?

I understand that you can “manually” change the sha256 64 string hexadecimal number, but for WIF private keys the generated key must have very specific strings, and changing those strings directly is really difficult, but not impossible. I rarely get a valid address trying to change the string of a previously acquired WIF Private Ke.
