What is the simplest way to test and confirm that I am the owner of a fund?

What is the simplest way to test and confirm that I am the owner of a fund other than sending actual coins?

I think I can verify the existing address with a signature/confirmation message, but is this the simplest? But what can you do with a SegWit address?
