a cryptocurrency project co-created by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, announced its launch in Singapore on Wednesday.

“Individuals in Singapore can now verify their unique humanity on Orb in the latest sign of growing global interest in proof of identity and the WorldCoin project,” the group said in a blog post.

Worldcoin’s post focused on the potential upside of a launch in an important and prosperous economic hub like Singapore, but the project was recently paused in India and closed its registration services in Brazil and France. At the time, Worldcoin told The Block that its plans in Brazil and France were only a limited preview until a more substantial launch in 2024.

Separately, the WorldCoin Foundation said, “The Orb-verified personal proof service has been temporarily scaled back (in India) to enable the protocol to develop and launch a customized, secure and orderly process that fully meets the demand.”

The Worldcoin project is an identity-focused initiative that will use Orb devices to scan people’s irises to “verify their humanity.” The project also distributes WLD tokens as an incentive for people to join the protocol. WLD initially suffered a significant price drop after launch, but has since rebounded and is trading at $3.70 as of 2:30 PM ET.

Building alliances in Singapore

“In addition to World ID verification, project contributor Tools for Humanity (TFH) has become a member of ACCESS and the Singapore Fintech Association (SFA), two of Singapore’s most respected startup and technology associations,” Worldcoin said. “The launch of the project and membership of the association follows a recent tour of several cities in Asia by members of the TFH product development team.”

Tools For Humanity is the main developer of Worldcoin. The company was co-founded by Altman and CEO and CEO Alex Blania.

According to the Worldcoin site, there are currently five places in Singapore where people can be verified.
