You can now apply for the Pennsylvania Rebate Program and receive $1,000
Pennsylvania residents can now apply for the Property Tax/Rent Rebate (PRTT) program, which could award up to $1,000. Qualifying seniors and disabled individuals are encouraged to apply for the Pennsylvania Rebate Program. Income limits for the PRTT program have been increased to cover more people.
PRTT Program: What has changed?
On Tuesday, Governor Josh Shapiro announced the launch of Pennsylvania’s property tax/rent rebate program. Governor Shapiro emphasized that the program’s income limit has been increased to $45,000 and is now the same for both homeowners and renters.
Approximately 175,000 additional Pennsylvanians will now benefit from the PRTT program. The program includes Pennsylvania residents age 65 and older, widows and widowers age 50 and older, and adults with disabilities.
Governor Shapiro said: “I have traveled across the Commonwealth and heard first-hand from seniors who say we need to do more to keep up with rising prices,” he added. “… “Both parties are working to expand this tax rebate to 175,000 Pennsylvanians.”
Governor Shapiro signed the bill into law last year. This is the first time since 2006 that the program’s income limit has been raised. Additionally, the maximum rebate available is now $1,000, up from $650 previously. Lottery proceeds help fund the PRTT program.
Additionally, the program’s income limit is now tied to cost of living to ensure that current beneficiaries are not disqualified due to general inflation.
“We’re taking action to ensure that your Social Security check doesn’t increase and prevent you from receiving property tax relief in the future,” said Governor Shapiro.
The Shapiro administration said the PRTT program used to provide 600,000 rebates a year, but recently only about 430,000 rebates were handed out because income limits were unchanged.
