Justin Sun Invites Crypto Leaders to $4.6 Million Charity Luncheon with Warren Buffet
Justin Sun, founder of cryptocurrency Tron and CEO of Bittorrent, had lunch with Berkshire Hathaway Chairman and CEO Warren Buffet after making a winning bid of $4,567,888.00 in an auction hosted by San Francisco-based charity GLIDE.
“This month, GLIDE celebrates the 20th anniversary of its eBay auction for Power Lunch with Warren Buffett. “This exciting annual effort raises funds for GLIDE’s comprehensive programs that benefit the most needy and underserved San Franciscans.”
Sun announced the winning bid on his Twitter account and shared his intentions for his now highly anticipated meeting with anti-cryptocurrency Buffett.
“I am officially announcing that I have won the record-breaking 20th Anniversary Charity Luncheon I hosted. @Warren Buffett. We will also invite #blockchain industry leaders to meet the investment giant. I hope this helps everyone.”
Shortly thereafter, Sun appeared on CNBC’s Squawkbox to discuss the event, why he put in the bid, as well as who he plans to bring in to fill the seven guest spots.
“I want to be a bridge between institutional investors, financial institutions, and traditional investors like Warren Buffett. Between the cryptocurrency community and the blockchain industry. So, I’d like to bring together seven leaders in the blockchain industry to talk to Warren Buffett about blockchain technology and the opportunities behind it.”
Buffett is notorious for being outspoken about his beliefs, calling Bitcoin ‘probably rat poison squared.’ The Sun asked whether this had anything to do with him and whether he believed he could change Buffet’s mind.
“I think Warren Buffett doesn’t have good sources for blockchain industry news and is mostly being misled by the media, so we’d like to have lunch with him.” “It’s so great how much progress we’ve made in the 10 years since 2009, and how much the blockchain industry is now, with even Facebook (and) JPMorgan starting to explore opportunities to launch their own stablecoins on blockchain. .” “I think it would be too much to change his mind after just a three-hour lunch. But we will certainly give him a different opinion on Bitcoin and blockchain technology.”
Sun said he plans to bring in a handful of other cryptocurrency pioneers, including Litecoin creator Charlie Lee, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin, and Changpeng Zhao, CEO of cryptocurrency exchange Binance. Although neither Lee nor Buterin responded (at least publicly) to the invitation. Zhao refused and explained his reasons on Twitter. With an exhortation to take his place:
@justinsuntron They kindly invited me, but I can’t go. too far. Assuming 5 people go, I guess it would be like turning down $1,000,000. lol… But I was really grateful. I would definitely recommend inviting them. @APompliano. I guess I’ll end up eating ‘rat poison’ at the buffet for lunch, lol. Plus, what if cryptocurrency entrepreneurs bought him lunch for the next 10 years? $50 million net present value, decent sized ICO, lol… Well, be careful what you wish for.
Although Pompliano has expressed interest, it is not yet clear whether the Sun will invite him or whether he will be able to attend the event. The remaining four seats are open for at least one potential figurehead in the cryptocurrency mining community.
