Noam Nisan discusses the concept of multidimensional fees in blockchain, highlighting the differences between easy and hard fee dimensions and their impact on transaction efficiency.

Exploring multidimensional fees in blockchain transactions

The concept of multidimensional fees is gaining attention in blockchain transactions as experts explore ways to optimize fee mechanisms. According to a16z Crypto, traditional one-dimensional gas fees may not adequately address the complexity of resource allocation in blockchain networks.

Understanding Multidimensional Fees

Noam Nisan, professor of computer science at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, elaborates on this topic by distinguishing between the ‘easy’ and ‘hard’ aspects of fees. The easy dimension does not reflect intra-block congestion and can be managed through a minimum pricing strategy. In contrast, the hard dimension represents resources that can become congested and have difficulty managing efficient fees.

Fee size

Nisan suggests ways to effectively manage these dimensions. He suggests that long-term capacity constraints, such as state size, can be handled with easy dimensions using price dynamics similar to EIP-1559 on Ethereum. He also describes techniques for estimating efficiency losses when simplifying hard dimensions to a single gas measurement.
